Greyhound Companions of New Mexico finds homes for greyhounds of any origin, not just retired racers. We have no criteria for accepting greyhounds needing rescue. We find homes for old, young, healthy or ill, injured or sound, of any size, shape, or color!
We attempt to construct a useful history on each dog in order to have a good personality and medical profile before placing them into a home. We specifically inquire on our application about prospective adopters' willingness to take on a greyhound with special needs, therefore we are sure not to place these greyhounds in homes unprepared to take on such a responsibility. We have placed greyhounds as old as 11 years and as young as five weeks. We have placed healthy, outgoing greyhounds and we have found homes for blind, ill, epileptic, injured, and mildly to excessively shy greyhounds. Our greyhounds are sterilized, microchipped, have their teeth cleaned, have been tested for heartworm, and given all required vaccinations. We can cat test if needed. We loan out crates, muzzles and any other items needed for the initial adaptation period. Our adoption coordinators are available whenever problems arise or to answer questions on behavior, health or anything else the adopter may think of! A full packet of information on training tips and greyhound behavior is provided to assist in understanding the greyhound and its needs. Completion of an adoption application is required and a visit to the prospective adopter's home is then scheduled by one of our adoption coordinators. If an applicant is not within our area (New Mexico, West Texas or Southern Colorado), we refer to the adoption program closest to them. This avoids unnecessary shipment which can be overly stressful, not to mention life threatening, for the greyhound. If you are interested in adopting a greyhound, we require that you print out and read the adoption information packet, then you can submit an on-line application if you feel this is the appropriate breed of dog for your household. Please be advised that retired racers have unique qualities that can present some challenges; however, once they adapt to your home and lifestyle, they can be one of the most endearing animal companions you've ever known. If you do not have access to a computer, please call Kent or Sara Mathis at 505-881-9034 or 505-268-2436 or Judy at 505-899-3245 and we can mail you the packet and an application. You can also email us at info@gcnm.org. Click on GREYHOUNDS FOR ADOPTION to see and read about Greyhounds we currently have available for adoption!
If after reading the information on greyhound behavior and health, you determine that a greyhound is NOT the ideal pet for your home, please consider adopting from one of the area shelters or you can visit this website for links to other breed rescues:
